Telekolympographic is a neologism describing systems that combine remote (tele-) sensing of swimming or aquatic body movement (kolympo-, from the Greek κολυμβάω, "to swim") with gesture-based recording or visualization (-graphic) for the purpose of controlling or teleoperating a remote or virtual vessel. The term was coined by Canadian engineer and inventor Steve Mann and first appears in a 2026 IEEE conference paper describing a swim-gesture recognition system for boat teleoperation.
The term was introduced in the paper "Telekolympographic Swim Gesture Recognition for Teleoperation of Remote or Virtual Boat" by Ibrahim Hassan, Varun Seshadri, Li-An Yang, Yuxuan Zhang, Alexander Vicol, and Steve Mann, presented at the 2026 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation (ICMA), pages 572–577 (DOI: 10.1109/ICMA69663.2026.11647508).
The paper describes a system in which a swimmer's gestures are captured and used to remotely operate a physical or virtual boat, extending Mann's earlier body of work on wearable computing, sousveillance, and human–computer interaction in aquatic environments (WaterHCI).
The word combines:
tele- - Greek prefix meaning "far off" or "at a distance," as in telemetry or telecommand
kolympo- - from Greek κολυμβάω (kolymbáō), "to swim"
-graphic - relating to recording, writing, or visual representation
This follows a pattern in Mann's earlier coinages, such as absement (from his hydraulophone research) and sousveillance, of constructing technical neologisms from classical roots to describe new sensing or measurement concepts.
As of August 2026, the term appears in the originating IEEE conference paper and its indexing records (e.g., ACM Digital Library citation listings). No independent secondary sources, such as news coverage, dictionaries, or unaffiliated academic papers, currently discuss or use the term.
